History

of our building

Our building is a contributor to the Main Street Historical District listed in the National Register of Historical Places. The structure was originally built in 1883 by Dr. Robert G. Redd as a drug store for his medical practice.

In 1915, Henry C. Smith, a local jeweler and former mayor, purchased the building and had the façade remodeled to fit the current architecture style, including the removal of the original spires and the addition of marble and terra cotta. Smith used the remodel to show a sophisticated side of Miles City in the early part of the new century.

Mr. Smith ran his jewelry store in the building, and an original tile mosaic of a pocket watch was placed in the entryway, which remains in place today. In a parade photo taken around 1915, the hanging sign also in the shape of a pocket watch is visible.

The subsequent owners of the building kept the interior wood trim in a dentil design from the 1915 remodel in place. Security Abstract & Title Company remodeled the building in 1994 and continues to maintain the historical exterior and interior whenever possible.
